By NANDITA VERMA
Special to India-West
MILPITAS, Calif. — The lovely Madhu Punjabi was crowned Miss India Northern California Dec. 9 in a contest so hot to handle that the firefighters had to come in…literally!
The 22-year-old financial analyst beat out eight finalists to take the bejeweled tiara amid a flurry of fire fighters and a blaring alarm after a mischievous admirer set it off at the event’s Milpitas venue, minutes into her crowning.
Coming in a close second was a glittering Meni Jayaswal, who wowed the judges with her “3-d” philosophy of dedication, devotion and determination, besting poetic Snigdha Malik for the first runner-up title. Malik was crowned the second runner-up in the competition.
The Bay Area beauties were pruned from 30 entries for the debut pageant organized by Shekhar Rahate’s Orange Productions. Title holder Punjabi will now compete in the Miss India USA beauty pageant to be held in New Jersey later this month.
